The misunderstanding

Somebody arrives, sees a National Register reference number and a quotation from a federal nomination, and concludes two things that are not true: that this publication is connected to the body that produced the document, and that the site is a guide to visiting the districts it describes.

Neither is the case. Rowan Logbook is a publication. It does not sell travel, arrange travel, book anything, take payments, or act for anybody, and it is not connected to any airline, airport, booking platform, or public body.

No connection to anybody

Rowan Logbook LLC is independent of every airline, airport, booking platform, travel agency, hotel, restaurant, preservation society, neighborhood association, historical commission, museum, records office and public body at any level of government. It holds no license, permit, appointment, accreditation or authorization from any of them, has never applied for one, and receives nothing from any of them.

Citing a federal historic nomination by its reference number is a citation. It is not an endorsement of this publication by the park service, by any state office, or by anybody else, and it implies no relationship of any kind. Where a record is described, it is described so a reader can go to it directly.

The office is a publishing office

Rowan Logbook LLC publishes at 4348 Southpoint Boulevard, Jacksonville, FL 32216 and does nothing else there. It is not a records office, not an archive, not a preservation body, not a historical society, and it holds no documents on anybody's behalf. A reader who needs a plat book or a nomination should go to the office that holds it, and checking a name says which one that is.

This is not scholarship, and not a guide

It is a careful reading of public records with the records named. The editor is not an archivist, a surveyor or a trained historian, and the site says so on about.

It is also not a guide. There is no recommendation on any page, no ranking, no list of things to see, and no business of any kind is named anywhere on this site. The districts in the catalogue are places where people live and work, and what this publication has to say about them is where their names came from.

Five entries admit what they could not establish

That is stated on the entries themselves and gathered on corrections. Nothing on this site should be read as settled where the entry says it is not, and a reader who wants certainty about a name should go to the record rather than to any website, including this one.

The strongest claim this publication makes is not that it is right. It is that it tells you where to check.

Names, people and communities

Where a name honors a person, that person is recorded as the person the name honors, in the office they held, in the year concerned. No page here takes a position on them.

Where a name comes from an indigenous language, the entry records which language family the record assigns it to and notes what is contested. This publication does not speak for any community, past or present, and Wacca Pilatka sets that boundary out where it arises.

Third party material

Records and documents described here remain the responsibility of whoever produced them. Rowan Logbook LLC does not control them, cannot keep them current, and is not answerable for them. A reader who finds a described record has moved is doing this register a favor by saying so.

Where this leaves a reader

The site prints what a record says about a name, with the year and the kind of record, and prints where the record runs out. It does not advise, guide, recommend, rank or certify anything. Everything beyond that belongs to the reader and to the record.
